Perry is Perry is a Chicago native, she was born into Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed her role. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until she reached adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental impact stress might have. Perry admitted that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school, but started doing it to meet new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry started her acting career in New York after graduation, getting small parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry come back to California to work as a stage actress. She and her mother starred on Broadway as a couple as part of The Other Place, in 2013. She performed with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, she starred in her own recurring part on her own ABC drama about politics Scandal with her father. That same year she appeared as a younger version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a younger version. Despite her family link to the character she got the part through an audition.
